Saturday, 17 November

The Deputy Secretary-General will travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to meet with senior Government officials attending the 11th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, as part of efforts to build momentum for climate action in advance of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change due to take place in Katowice, Poland, in December. She will also meet with the President and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the UN Country team.

The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, will travel to Cairo, Egypt, where he will give a keynote speech and participate in a regional conference on enhancing the performance of peacekeeping operations. During his visit to Cairo, which will last until 19 November, Mr. Lacroix will meet with government officials about Egypt’s participation in peacekeeping.

Monday, 19 November

The Deputy Secretary-General will travel to Germany, and then on to France and China, where she will engage with senior Government officials on supporting successful outcomes at the upcoming conference in Katowice and the Secretary-General’s 2019 Climate Summit. She will return to New York on 22 November.

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on the Middle East.

In the afternoon, the Security Council will be briefed on the Middle East, followed by consultations on Syria.

Tuesday, 20 November

Today is Africa Industrialization Day.

The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, will travel to Tokyo, Japan, to exchange views with senior government officials on developments related to UN peacekeeping. Mr. Lacroix will also deliver a speech on 22 November, hosted by the Sophia Institute of International Relations and the UN Information Centre, on the achievements and challenges of UN Peacekeeping. He will return to New York on 23 November.

In the morning, the Security Council will hold an Open Debate on Peace and Security in Africa, on the subject of strengthening peacekeeping operations on the continent.

At 10:30 a.m., in the Trusteeship Chamber, ahead of a special meeting of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee in December, the Chair of the Committee will hold an open interactive briefing for the wider membership of the United Nations. At the Spokesperson’s Noon Briefing, Emmy-nominated actress and star of Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown, will brief reporters on the importance of empowering children, as part of UNICEF’s commemorations of Universal Children's Day.

The guests at the Noon Briefing will be Mr. Dean Brooks, Director, INEE (Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies); Ms. Rajika Bhandari, Ph.D. Senior Advisor, Research and Strategy, Director, IIE Center for Academic Mobility Research & Impact, Institute of International Education; and Ms. Ninette Kelly, Director of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in New York. They will brief reporters on UNESCO’s flagship annual education report, the 2019 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report – Migration, displacement and education: Building bridges, not walls.

In Geneva, at 09:30 a.m., in Room III, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) will hold a press conference to launch the Landmine Monitor 2018 Report. Speakers will include Renata Dwan, Director, UNIDIR; Amelie Chayer, Government Liaison and Policy Manager for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines; Mark Hiznay, Editor of the mine ban policy section, Associate Director Arms Division, Human Rights Watch; Loren Persi, Editor of the casualties and victim assistance section, International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Marion Lodoo, Editor of the support for mine action section, International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

Wednesday, 21 November

In the morning, the Security Council will hold consultations on resolution 1701 (Lebanon) and the resolution 1718 (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea).

In the afternoon, the Security Council will be briefed on Burundi.

At 11:00 a.m., there will be a press briefing by the President of the General Assembly, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés.

In Geneva, at 11:00 a.m., in Press Room 1, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs will hold a press conference on the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic. Najat Rochdi, Humanitarian Coordinator in CAR, will be the speaker.

From 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Palais des Nations, in Room XX, in commemoration of World Television Day today, the UN Information Service in Geneva will organize, together with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an[bit.ly/WorldTVDay2018]event under the theme: “Serving the peoples of the world: perspectives on the role of TV and the public interest”. This event follows the signing of a Letter of Intent to cooperate between the UN Office at Geneva Director-General Michael Møller and EBU Director-General Noel Curran, on 19 November. The event is composed of three panel discussions, and a possibility to visit UNTV studios on the sidelines. French and English interpretation in Room XX will be provided.

Thursday, 22 November

In Geneva, at 10:00 a.m., in Room III, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), will release the l WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin with details on annual average concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The speakers include Professor Pavel Kabat, WMO Chief Scientist and Research Director, and Dr Oksana Tarasova, Chief, Atmospheric Environment Research Division.
