Monday, 10 September 

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on the Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Corruption and Conflict.

At 11:00 a.m., there will be an embargoed briefing on climate by the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Prof. Petteri Taalas.

At 3:00 p.m., the Secretary-General will deliver a major address on climate change on the North Lawn (if it rains, it will take place in the Delegates’ Dining Room).The Secretary-General will outline the danger, highlight solutions, and emphasize the need for greater ambition and stronger leadership in addressing what he has called “the defining threat of our time”.

Also at 3:00 p.m., in the General Assembly Hall, there will be a plenary meeting on ‘2001-2010: Decade to Roll Back Malaria in Developing Countries Particularly in Africa’

In Geneva, the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Syria has invited senior officials from Russia, Turkey and Iran for formal consultations at the United Nations at Geneva from the 10th and the 11th September to work on the constitutional committee; followed by a meeting on the 14th of September building on consultations held in June this year, with the senior representatives of USA, France, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany, UK, Egypt, for formal consultations on the way ahead on the political process pursuant to Security Council resolution 2254 (2015), including the UN effort to facilitate the establishment of a constitutional committee, and the broader dimensions of the effort.

At 1:00 p.m. in Room III, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will hold a joint press briefing following the UNHCR/OCHA Principals’ joint mission to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The speakers will be the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock.

Tuesday, 11 September

The Secretary-General will travel to Ghana to attend the funeral of former Secretary-General Kofi Annan which will take place on 13 September.

At 9:00 a.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, there will be the Secretary-General’s presentation of the implementation plan for the inception of the reinvigorated Resident Coordinator system, in the context of the General Assembly resolution 72/279 on the repositioning of the United Nations development system.

The guest at the Noon Briefing will be Mr. Knut Ostby, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim in Myanmar.

Wednesday, 12 September

 

Today is the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation.

 

In the morning, the Security Council will have a debate on UN peacekeeping operations.

At 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room 11, there will be an event entitled “Fortieth Anniversary of the Adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action” on the occasion of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation co-organized by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the Permanent Mission of Argentina.

In Geneva, at 10:30 a.m. in Press Room 1, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will present the 2018 Report on UNCTAD assistance to the Palestinian people (Embargoed 12 September at 5 p.m. GMT). The speaker will be Mahmoud Elkhafif, Coordinator of the Assistance to the Palestinian People, UNCTAD.

At 12:00 p.m. in Room III, the Human Rights Council will present the report by the Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic on the human rights situation in the country covering the period between mid-January and mid-July 2018, as well as the latest developments in the country on the human rights front. The speakers will be Mr. Paulo Pinheiro, Chairperson, Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, Ms. Karen Abuzayd, Member of the Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic and Mr. Hanny Megally, Member of the Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic.

At 2:00 p.m. in Press Room 1, the World Health Organization (WHO) - International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will launch the latest global cancer data. The data highlights the great diversity of cancer and variations in the magnitude and profile of the disease between and within world regions.

The speakers will be Dr. Christopher Wild, Director of IARC, Dr. Freddie Bray, Head of Section of Cancer Surveillance, IARC and Dr. Jacques Ferlay, Scientist, Section of Cancer Surveillance, IARC.

Thursday, 13 September

 

In the morning, the Security Council is expected to adopt resolutions on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and Colombia.

At 11:00 a.m., in S-237, there will be an end-of-presidency briefing by the President of the 72nd Session of the General Assembly, Mr. Miroslav Lajčák.

The guest at the Noon Briefing will be Michael Keating, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

 

Friday, 14 September

 

At 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room 5, there will be an event entitled “Global Thinkers Dialogue: China’s South-South Cooperation in Agriculture” on the occasion of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, co-organized by the United Nations Office for South-South (UNOSSC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
