The Secretary-General arrives in Beijing, where he will speak at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. During his visit, the Secretary-General will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and other senior Chinese officials. He will also meet with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, and other African leaders on the margins of the Summit.

 Tuesday, 4 September

The Secretary-General will return to New York in the evening.

At 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room 3, there will be the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction First session (4-17 September 2018).

At 10:00 a.m., in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, there will be the 391st meeting of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

At 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room 6, there will be an Orientation Course for New Delegates on the Fifth Committee on Key Players co-organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Permanent Mission of Switzerland). The event will continue until 6 September.

At 3:00 p.m., in S-237, there will be a press briefing by Ambassador Nikki Haley, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of September.

In Geneva, at 2:00 p.m. in Press Room 1, the World Health Organization (WHO) will launch its first-ever global estimates of insufficient physical activity among adults over time, from 2001-2016. The speakers will be: Dr Regina Guthold, Study lead author, Epidemiology, Monitoring and Evaluation, WHO and Dr Fiona Bull, Study co-author, Programme Manager, Management of Noncommunicable Diseases, WHO.

 Wednesday, 5 September

Today is the International Day of Charity.

At 10:00 a.m. in the General Assembly Hall there will be a High-level forum on a Culture of Peace pursuant to General Assembly resolution 72/137 of 11 December 2017.

In Geneva, at 9:15 a.m. in Press Room 1, the Human Rights Council will hold a briefing on its  39th regular session (10 – 28 September 2018). A light breakfast will be served outside the Press Room. The speaker will be Ambassador Vojislav Šuc (Slovenia), President of the Human Rights Council (12th cycle).

At 11:00 a.m. in Room III, there will be a briefing by the Human Rights Council / Commission of Inquiry on Burundi. The members of the Commission of Inquiry will present their conclusions and written report on human rights violations committed in Burundi in 2017 and 2018. The speakers will be Mr. Doudou Diène, President of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi and Ms. Françoise Hampson, member of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi.

In Geneva at 4:30 p.m. in Room III, there will be a briefing on the Second 2018 meeting of the Group of Governmental Experts on Emerging Technologies in the Area of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems. The speaker will be Ambassador Amandeep Singh Gill, Chairman of the Group.
