 Today is an official holiday at UN Headquarters (Memorial Day) and the premises will be closed.

 In Geneva, at 12:30 p.m. in Press Room 1, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will hold a briefing on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic. The speaker will be Ms. Najat Rochdi, Humanitarian Coordinator in the CAR.

Tuesday, 29 May

Today is the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. The Secretary-General will be in Mali,

where he will spend Peacekeepers’ Day in Bamako, with troops and personnel from the UN Mission in the country (MINUSMA).

 In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on and hold consultations on the Middle East (Syria).

At 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room 4, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1373 concerning counter-terrorism will have an open meeting on countering terrorist narratives and preventing terrorist use of the Internet.

 In the afternoon, the Security Council will be briefed on the Letter from the Permanent Representative for Ukraine (S/2014/136).

At 12:30 p.m., in S-237, there will be a press briefing by Tongan Olympic athlete Pita Taufatofua, who will talk about his work with youth in the Pacific and his participation in the President of the General Assembly’s Youth Dialogue on 30 May.

In Geneva, at 9:30 a.m. in Room III, the World Health Organization (WHO) will have a press conference on the World No Tobacco Day 2018 (31 May). It will talk about its new publication, entitled ‘The WHO global report on trends in prevalence of tobacco smoking 2000–2025.’ The speakers will be: Dr Douglas Bettcher, Director, Department for the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, WHO; Dr Kerstin Schotte, Medical officer, Department for the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, WHO and Dr Vinayak Prasad, Project Manager, Tobacco Control, WHO.

Wednesday, 30 May

 In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on and hold consultations on the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The President of the General Assembly will convene his Youth Dialogue, at 10:00 a.m. in the Economic and Social Council Chamber.

As part of the President’s Youth Dialogue, a Youth Media Zone will be set up in the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) Room, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In the afternoon, the Security Council will hold consultations on the 1718 Committee.

 Thursday, 31 May

Today is World No-Tobacco Day.

 The Secretary-General is expected to be back in New York today.

In the morning, the Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution on South Sudan sanctions.

At 10 a.m., in S-237, there will be a press briefing by Ms. Chantal Line Carpentier, Chief of the UNCTAD New York Office, on the 2018 Economic Development in Africa Report titled “Migration and Structural Transformation in Africa”.

At 3:00 p.m. in Conference Room 2, there will be an event entitled “Intercultural Dialogue for Peace and Development” on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (21 May) co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Colombia, Hungary, Qatar, Senegal, Slovakia and Vanuatu.

In Geneva, at 3 p.m. there will be an official ceremony for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers United Nations Memorial (Ariana Park) on Room XXVI, in memory of the Peacekeepers who have lost their lives for the cause of peace. A flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony and the observance of a minute of silence.

At 6:30 p.m. at the Cinéma Cinerama Empire (rue de Carouge 72-74) Ciné ONU will present, on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, ‘Until there is Peace’. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Melanie Kaslman, Director of the film and General Jean Baillaud, former Deputy Commander of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Friday, 1 June

Today is the Global Day of Parents.

At 9:30 a.m., the Secretary-General will lay a wreath in honour of all fallen peacekeepers at the Peacekeepers’ Memorial Site in the North Lawn. The ceremony is open to United Nations-accredited media. The event cannot be webcast live for technical reasons, but a recording will be available later in the morning as a “recent on demand video” at http://webtv.un.org.  If there is inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Visitors’ Lobby near the Chagall window.

At 10 a.m., the Secretary-General will preside over the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal ceremony in the ECOSOC Chamber.

At 11:00 a.m. in Conference Room 1, there will be an event entitled “The Impact of Good Parents on Children and Society: The Many Benefits of Nurturing Children's Integrity in the Home” on the occasion of the Global Day of Parents, co-organized by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See and the Universal Peace Federation.

At 4:30. p.m., the Under Secretaries-General of Peacekeeping Operations, Field Support and Public Information will open a multimedia exhibit titled: “UN Peacekeepers – 70 Years of Service and Sacrifice” in the Visitors’ Lobby of the UN General Assembly building. UN-accredited media are welcome.
