3 ago - The UN is deeply concerned for the safety and protection of thousands of civilians trapped inside Raqqa city in Syria as the fighting and military operations in the area continue, said the UN Spokesperson on 31 July. An estimated 20,000 to 50,000 people have been trapped inside the city without access to clean and safe drinking water for 48 days.

Medical and nutrition goods reach besieged eastern Ghouta

On 27 July, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent delivered medical and nutrition items from the UN and the Red Cross in besieged eastern Ghouta in rural Damascus, with a second batch of supplies planned in the near future to complete the delivery. The UN has requested access to towns in eastern Ghouta as part of its proposed inter‑agency convoy plan for August and September, and stands ready to provide additional immediate humanitarian support to the area as soon as access is authorized and security permits.

'None of us should stand silent' while civilians suffer in Syria, Security Council told

Despite the remarkable hope and strength shown by most Syrians, daily life remains dangerous for millions of people across the country, Deputy UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Ursula Mueller warned on 27 July, calling for the parties to the six year conflict to stop targeting civilians, to allow humanitarian access, and to end the “horrific” practice of besiegement. She was speaking to the the UN Security Council via videoconference from Amman, Jordan, after visiting earlier in the day the Azraq refugee camp, where around 35,000 refugees live.

UN urges international community to help and protect trafficking victims
The United Nations is calling on the international community to act now to help and protect trafficking victims and to end this crime forever. “Conflict is a breeding ground for criminal activity,” said Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). “People forced from their homes are falling prey to human traffickers as they try desperately to escape the violence.” In Syria, for example, women and children there were less likely to be trafficked before 2011, according to the latest UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons. “Since the start of the Syrian crisis, however, an increasing number of countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East have detected trafficking victims from this country,” Mr. Fedotov said on 30 July.

Some great news! Yesterday, the first ever inter-agency convoy reached the besieged town of Nashabiyeh in eastern Ghouta, Syria. It's a welcome relief for people who have been cut off from aid. But parties to conflict need to do much more to enable regular, sustained access to people in need across the country, including every single one of the more than 4.5 million men, women and children in hard-to-reach and besieged areas.

@ShareTheMeal: In April 2016, the World Food Programme launched its phone application to support fundraising efforts for Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. ShareTheMeal’s fundraising aims to support 1,400 refugee children. Through the app, smartphone users can join thousands of other people in making donations and support a selected community and monitor progress. Since the launch of the campaign, more than 15 million meals have been shared.

#Unite4Heritage is a global movement run by UNESCO that aims to celebrate and safeguard cultural heritage and diversity around the world. Launched in response to the unprecedented attacks on world heritage sites, the campaign calls on everyone to stand up against extremism and radicalization by celebrating the places, objects and cultural traditions that make the world such a rich and vibrant place.

#NoLostGeneration: The initiative was launched by UNICEF and partners in 2013 to focus attention on the plight of children affected by the Syrian crisis. By articulating real concerns about the possible ‘loss’ of a generation of children to the effects of violence and displacement, the initiative put education and child protection at the centre of the response inside Syria and across the refugee hosting countries (Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt).
