International Year of Pulses - Activities and events in the Africa region

Since the beginning of the year, there have been various events and activities in the Africa region to raise awareness on the importance of Pulses, such as the Joint World Cowpea and Pan-African Grain Legume Research Conference held in Zambia in February 2016. Following the request of the FAO Assistant Director General/Regional Representative for Africa, all FAO Representations in Africa have been encouraged to promote the IYP through identifying together with governments, a specific day to mark the IYP).

So far, 12 countries have marked the IYP and some country highlights include: raising awareness during the World Food Day celebrations in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Niger, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zambia. In other countries, such as Malawi, the IYP was celebrated through advocacy events at National Agriculture Fairs.

Awareness raising activities are expected to continue until the end of the year, as some countries such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, Liberia, Tanzania, Gambia, Senegal, Uganda and Angola are organizing workshops, field days and food fairs to mark the IYP. Ms. Elizabeth Mpofu, the IYP-Special Ambassador for the region of Africa has also been playing a strategic role in supporting the various awareness raising activities especially among smallholders and family farmers.
