On 20 October, in a plenary meeting on agenda item 11, Sport for development and peace, the General Assembly considered the Secretary-General's report on the matter. In addition to the Vice-President of the 69th session of the General Assembly, 17 UN Member States and Observers made statements on this occasion, highlighting the achievements of the UN, their countries and organizations as well as addressing remaining challenges.

After today’s adoption of the related Resolution, which was introduced by Tunisia, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace Mr. Wilfried Lemke, commented: "I am excited and encouraged by the adoption of this year’s Resolution. It shows that the UN, its member states and other relevant stakeholders are committed to using sport for development and peace. More and more, sport is being recognized as an efficient and effective tool to help support the achievement of a wide array of goals and objectives, evidenced by this decision today, as well as numerous other resolutions and reports on the cause. This is yet another important milestone to ensure further momentum in this field.”

In particular, the Resolution expresses appreciation of the leadership of the Special Adviser, supported by the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP), on issues relating to sport for development and peace. It acknowledges UN Member States’ support in promoting greater awareness and action to foster human development and accelerate the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through sport-based initiatives and promoting the integration of sport for development and peace in the development agenda. Looking forward, the Resolution encourages Members States to give due consideration to sport in the context of the post-2015 development agenda.

The Resolution also reaffirms the contribution of the Olympic movement as a unique means for the promotion of peace and development. In this respect, the Resolution welcomes the memorandum of understanding signed between the International Olympic Committee and the United Nations in April 2014, which calls to strengthen efforts around sport-based initiatives that encourage social and economic development.

Finally, the Resolution recognizes the efforts of the contributing Member States and UNOSDP in the Sport for Development and Peace International Working Group (SDP IWG) for which UNOSDP hosts the Secretariat. The SDP IWG promotes the integration of Sport for Development and Peace policy recommendations into the national and international development strategies of Governments.
