State of the World’s Volunteerism Report: Universal Values for Global Well-being (UNV)
Stressing that volunteerism contributes to the well-being of individuals, communities and society, a new United Nations report released today urges countries not to forget this largely untapped asset. This report by UN Volunteers (UNV) presents for the first time empirical evidence of the importance and contribution of volunteerism on a global scale. It was released today on the occasion of International Volunteer Day, which is observed annually on 5 December and which this year also marks the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers.

UN Development Business (UNDB)
This publication - an important vehicle for outreach to the private sector - launched its new website in November. The website offers innovative tools and a new design for intuitive searches of business opportunities advertised by multilateral development banks, national governments and United Nations agencies. The publication is also leveraging interactive tools like Facebook and Twitter to connect with its audience and share daily updates. With its new features, the website will improve efficiency of information exchanges as an important part of the procurement process.

Economic & Social Development

Child Safety Online: Global Challenges and Strategies (UNICEF)
For many of today’s children, the Internet, mobile phones and other technologies are a constant and familiar presence. The report examines how children are using the Internet, and how they can be protected.

Corruption in the Land Sector (FAO / Transparency International)
Unprecedented pressures on land have been created as new areas are cultivated, taken over by expanding urban centres or abandoned due to degradation, climate change and conflict," according to a paper jointly prepared by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and global corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI). "These developments have strained the rules, processes and institutions that determine which land resources are used, by whom, for how long, and under what conditions," the working paper reads.

Energy-Smart Food for People and Climate (FAO)
The global food system needs to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels to succeed in feeding a growing world population. High and fluctuating prices of fossil fuels and doubts regarding their future availability mean that agri-food systems need to shift to an "energy-smart" model.

Livelihood Security: Climate Change, Migration and Conflict in the Sahel
A joint study involving four UN agencies has analyzed regional climate trends over the past 40 years and their implications for the availability of natural resources, livelihoods, migration and conflict in 17 West African countries. The analysis, released in Durban at the UN Climate Change Convention talks, shows that overall temperatures have raised, droughts have been recurrent and severe, rainfall has generally increased and floods have occurred more frequently and with more intensity. The study was conducted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations University (UNU) and the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS).

Women at the Frontline of Climate Change: Gender Risks and Hopes (UNEP)
Women, particularly those living in mountain regions in developing countries, are facing disproportionately high risks to their livelihoods and health from climate change, as well as associated risks such as human trafficking. Women often play a stronger role than men in the management of ecosystem services and food security. Hence, sustainable adaptation must focus on gender and the role of women if it is to become successful.

World Malaria Report 2011 (WHO)
Executive summary and key points also available in French & Spanish.
The expansion of malaria prevention and control measures have resulted in a decline of more than 25 per cent in the number of deaths caused by the disease in the past decade, and a 33 per cent reduction in mortality rates in Africa, the disease’s heartland, according to a United Nations report unveiled today. The World Malaria Report by the UN World Health Organization (WHO) attributes the success to the widespread use of bed nets, better diagnostics and greater availability of effective drugs.

Working towards a Balanced and Inclusive Green Economy (UNEP)
The report outlines steps and policies for pursuing a green economic transformation that generates new sources of sustainable and equitable economic growth that will assist in a global economic recovery.

Human Rights

Justice in Matters involving Child Victims: Online Training (UNICEF / UNODC)
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Office for Drug and Crime (UNODC) have launched an online training portal for justice professionals who deal with cases involving child victims and child witnesses of crime. The training portal, the first of its kind, will target geographically diverse criminal justice professionals, including law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, social workers, health sector workers, lawyers and informal justice providers.

Report of independent international commission of inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic (A/HRC/S-17/2/Add.1, 23 November 2011)
English, French & Spanish:
Paragraph 14 of the resolution adopted by the Council at its 17th special session entitled "The situation of human rights in the Syrian Arab Republic", requested that the report of an independent international commission of inquiry established pursuant to paragraph 13 of the same resolution be "made public as soon as possible and, in any case, before the end of November 2011".

Study documenting discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity (A/HRC/19/41)
The first ever United Nations report on the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people details how around the world people are killed or endure hate-motivated violence, torture, detention, criminalization and discrimination in jobs, health care and education because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The report, released on 15 December by the UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, outlines “a pattern of human rights violations… that demands a response,” and says governments have too often overlooked violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
