The report notes that economic insecurity arises from the exposure of individuals, communities and countries to adverse events, and from their inability to cope with and recover from the downside losses. It further notes that a strong "social contract" is needed to secure spaces within which individuals, households and communities can pursue their day-to-day activities with reasonable degree of predictability and stability, and with due regard for the aims and interests of others.

It is a critical part of the wider UN response to climate change.

Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization (ILO)

Amid widespread uncertainty in the world of work, ranging from financial turmoil and economic downturn to growing unemployment, informality and insufficient social protection, the governments, workers and employers of the International Labour Organization (ILO) have adopted a landmark Declaration designed to strengthen the ILO’s capacity to promote its Decent Work Agenda and forge an effective response to the growing challenges of globalization.

Towards Universal Access: Scaling up priority HIV/AIDS interventions in the health sector; Progress Report June 2008
The end of 2007 marks an important step in the history of the HIV epidemic. According to this WHO, UNAIDS and UNICEF report nearly a million more people (950,000) were receiving treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) in low- and middle-income countries by year’s end, bringing the total number of recipients to close to 3 million—a more than seven-fold increase over four years.

Advance unedited version:
The recent global food crisis can be seen as a wake-up call which can be turned into an opportunity by developing countries and the international community to revitalize global agriculture production and trade. The report was prepared for the High-Level Conference on World Food Security (3-5 June 2008, Rome, Italy).

UNAIDS policy brief on food security
Short version:
Expanded version:
The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), have developed a policy brief on HIV, food security and nutrition. As food insecurity and poor nutrition can hasten the progression of AIDS related illnesses, and the virus itself reduces the capacity of people living with HIV to work to provide food for themselves and their families, the policy provides guidance for governments, civil society and other partners on how to address food and nutrition concerns in the context of HIV.
