Telling the untold stories

11 August 2014 - Everyone has a story to tell, but they are not always heard. In an effort to bring individual stories to the foreground, the Humans of New York and the UN have joined forces in an exciting global project that uses photography as a means of communicating the challenges that we all need to tackle together.

The Humans of New York (HONY) began as an endeavour to document the people of New York City, using photography as a way of recording humanity. Along the way, the photograper behind HONY started to collect quotes and short stories from the people he met, including these snippets alongside the photographs. With over eight millions followers on social media, HONY now provides a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.

HONY has now teamed up with the UN, expanding the scope of the project. In the course of 50 days, HONY will be travelling across the globe, in what has naturally been called "The World Tour", posting portraits and stories from the trip. The point of the trip is not to "say" anything in particular about the world. But rather to listen to as many people as possible. Through this project, the public will be able to connect with individuals from all walks of life.

In addition to gathering portraits and stories, the tour also aims to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which should be met by 2015.  Thus, besides telling the stories of individuals, HONY and the UN  hope that this trip may in some ways help to inspire a global perspective, while bringing awareness to the challenges that we must overcome.

HONY is currently in the Middle East, with the latest photos and stories being posted from Iraq.

“My happiest moments are whenever I see my mother happy.”
“What’s the happiest you’ve ever seen her?”
"When I was a child, some German doctors told us that I could have a surgery in Italy, and my legs would work again. She was so happy she started crying. But I never had the money to go.” (Erbil, Iraq)
