"Take a stand for teachers!" - World Teachers' Day Motto!

WTD2012World Teachers’ Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994 - when it was created by UNESCO - celebrates teachers worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.

"Take a stand for teachers!" is the 2012 motto for World Teachers' Day. Celebrations are being organized around the world. UNESCO calls on everyone to consider undertaking a special celebration for World Teachers' Day. Register your celebration for World Teachers' Day 2012 and share your plans with others, here.

"Teachers… ultimately determine our collective ability to innovate, to invent, to find solutions for tomorrow. Nothing will ever replace a good teacher. Nothing is more important than supporting them.” (Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General).

The day also commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 signature of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers.

  • New Report: "Youth and skills: Putting education to work"

wtdreportMany young people around the world — especially the disadvantaged — are leaving school without the skills they need to thrive in society and find decent jobs.

As well as thwarting young people’s hopes, these education failures are jeopardizing equitable economic growth and social cohesion, and preventing many countries from reaping the potential benefits of their growing youth populations.

The 2012 Education for All Global Monitoring Report will examine how skills development programmes can be improved to boost young people’s opportunities for decent jobs and better lives.

The Report will be launched on 16 October.
