WTO-compThe United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has launched an online photo competition. They are looking for pictures that capture how the tourism sector is implementing new ideas to increase energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in its operations, or photos showing how tourism is bringing modern and clean energy to local communities. Photos could also capture how you, as a tourist, are taking concrete actions towards a more sustainable tourism sector.

The competition, part of this year's World Tourism Day activities, is open to all people of all ages. The first prize is a seven-day round-trip to Spain for two. Deadline for submissions is 31 August.

World Tourism Day 2012, on 27 September, is being held under the theme Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development. Official celebrations will take place in Maspalomas, Spain.

This year’s theme aims to highlight tourism’s role in a brighter energy future; a future in which the world’s entire population has access to modern, efficient and affordable energy services.

Tourism, one of the world’s largest economic sectors, has already taken important steps towards this future – improving energy efficiency and increasingly using renewable energy technologies in its operations. These steps are creating jobs, lifting people out of poverty and helping to protect the planet.

Winning photos will be displayed on the UNWTO website. In addition, a number of prizes are on offer:

  • 1st Prize – A seven-day round-trip to Spain for two*
  • 4 Runners-up will be awarded with a digital camera
  • Winning photos will be featured on
