Seminar on 'The Future of Mediation on Nagorno-Karabakh'
Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) is organising a seminar on 'The Future of Mediation on
Nagorno-Karabakh'.
The event will take place on 11 July 2011
(3:00 pm - 5:30 pm) in
Rome and will be hosted by the Banca Monte
Paschi di Siena at Palazzo Rondinini, Via del Corso 518.
The unresolved
Nagorno-Karabkah conflict continues to represent the main threat to security and
stability in the
South Caucasus and a major
impediment to regional cooperation. To date, the main mediation forum - the OSCE
Minsk Group - has been largely unsuccessful in achieving its mandate. The
roundtable will bring together a group of Italian and international experts and
officials, in order to asses (1) to what extent is the Minsk Group's lack of
success and the frustration this has generated giving rise to alternative or
complementary impulses for conflict mediation (e.g., conducted by Russia or
other third parties)? (2) what are the prospects for the deployment of an OSCE
or other peacekeeping force in the conflict zone?
The seminar is a part
of IAI's research programme '
Italy, the EU and the
South
Caucasus' that will be followed by other two seminars and one final
conference.
