The Slovak Republic, which holds the presidency of the Security Council for February, has prepared a concept paper entitled, "Maintenance of international peace and security: role of the Security Council in supporting security sector reform" (S/2007/72). The report outlines the main actors interested in security sector reform and highlights priorities for discussion.

United Nations Counter-Terrorism Online Handbook

The Handbook is the collaborative effort of the 24-member Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF). While the Handbook is intended primarily for Member States and UN partner organizations it will also serve as a useful source of information for UN staff both at Headquarters and in the field. The Handbook will enable global as well as regional tracking of counter-terrorism related activities and efforts of United Nations entities. Those efforts can be searched according to several broad themes, such as prevention and technical assistance, or by a more narrow focus on areas such as financing of terrorism; promoting tolerance and dialogue; protecting nuclear, biological, chemical or radiological materials; preventing travel by terrorists; providing training to law enforcement; drafting of anti-terrorism legislation; defending human rights; or dealing with hostage situations.

The expert - a - day exercise aims to bring the environment into public consciousness and to create a healthy discourse on the major issues that affect the health of our planet and the sustainability of natural resources. The feature also lends a human face to the work of UNEP by allowing in-house experts to discuss the work undertaken by the organization - taking on board suggestions and perspectives of international constituents and stakeholders.

Child Poverty in Perspective: An Overview of Child Well-Being in Rich Countries (UNICEF report)

The UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre released the seventh report in its Report Card series. The report is the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive assessment on the well-being of children and young people in the world’s advanced economies (21 selected OECD member countries), focusing on six dimensions: material well-being, health and safety, education, peer and family relationships, behaviours and risks, and young people’s own subjective sense of well-being. The landmark report shows that among all of the countries studied, there are improvements to be made and that no single country leads in all six of the areas.

The GEO Year Book 2007 is the fourth annual report on the changing environment produced by the United Nations Environment Programme in collaboration with many world environment experts.  The 2007 Year Book includes global and regional overviews of significant developments over the past year. It highlights linkages among ecosystem health, human well-being, and economic development; examines new thinking on the value of ecosystem services and the threat from ecosystem degradation; and describes recent research findings and policy decisions that affect our awareness and response to global change.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched a new Web site on standards and norms in education. A collection of UNESCO’s standard-setting and normative instruments in education, it also includes support documents, and other UN documents about the right to education. A general introduction to the instruments is available, as well as specific instruments, texts and documents on nine themes: Education for All Coordination, Education for Girls and Women, Higher Education, Inclusive Education, Literacy and Adult Education, Peace & Human Rights, Right to Education & Discrimination in Education, Teacher Education, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched a web site on the right to food, providing practical information for policy-makers, legal practitioners, civil society members, UN staff, academics and the general public. Resources include training materials and an e-learning course, tools to raise awareness of the right to food including a glossary, and a virtual library containing manuals, technical papers, policy briefs, case studies and publications.

The Innovation Briefs series provides insights into the most recent policy-relevant research on emerging challenges to sustainable development, with particular attention to their relevance to developing countries. The purpose of this series is to inform policy makers of the latest trends and advances on topics in the field of sustainable development, with the objective of broadening the knowledge base of policy decision-makers in responding to those challenges.
Each issue of the Briefs covers a particular topic from the point of view of applied research. The Briefs aim at being self-contained and non-technical, and are drafted with a view to serving as an introduction to further reading by government staff. Another potential audience are policy advisors and practitioners in development cooperation agencies and non-governmental organizations.

World Tourism Barometer (UNWTO report)

With 842 million arrivals and a 4.5% growth rate, 2006 exceeded expectations as the tourism sector continued to enjoy above average results, making it a new record year for the industry. The latest figures suggest that 2007 will consolidate this performance and turn into the fourth year of sustained growth.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched an interactive educational resource African Passages on the legacy of the trans-atlantic slave trade. Using visuals, music, scholarly commentary and educational activities African Passages: connects the history of the Ashley River Corridor in South Carolina with its roots in Barbados and Africa; links the past to the present with the voices and images of the descendants of slaves; and reveals the persistence of African cultural heritage through practices and traditions handed down through generations.

"Free Children from War" (Paris Conference, 5 – 6 February 2007)

Representatives of 58 countries meeting in Paris committed themselves to putting an end to the unlawful recruitment and use of children in armed conflicts. The Paris conference, with the theme of Free Children from War, brought together both countries affected by the use of child soldiers as well as donor nations to tackle the recruitment of children and to harness the political will to confront it. The “Paris Commitments” endorsed during the conference urge governments to spare no effort to end the unlawful recruitment and use of children by armed forces or groups in all regions of the world, and to ensure that conscription and enlistment procedures for recruitment into armed forces comply with applicable international law. Also endorsed at the conference were the “Paris Principles”, a detailed set of guidelines for protecting children from recruitment and for providing effective assistance to those already involved with armed groups or forces.

The HAR provides an annual overview of the agency’s emergency assistance programmes within the context of UN-wide appeals. The report sets out UNICEF’s relief activities and its financial requirements for meeting the needs of children and women.
