  • General Assembly (GA) - 65th session
  • Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) - 2011 session

Looking beyond today's crises, more than 190 countries discussed in Rio the framework of "A Future We Want".

Interview with former UN official Brian Urquhart
Part 1: http://www.un.org/apps/news/newsmakers.asp?NewsID=70
Part 2: http://www.un.org/apps/news/newsmakers.asp?NewsID=79
The United Nations News Centre has prepared a two-part multimedia story to mark the 94th birthday in February of Sir Brian Urquhart. Sir Brian Urquhart is a living chronicle of a large part of 20th century history and occupies a special place in United Nations history. Throughout his four decades of service to the Organization, starting as one of its very first staff members and ending as an Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, he also helped shape history-making moments. He was present for the birth of the United Nations in 1945, and was witness to many of the Organization’s - and the world’s - seminal milestones. As Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a tribute on the occasion of Sir Brian’s 90th birthday four years ago, "You have had an enormous influence on every Secretary-General. Even today, staffers everywhere seek to live up to your example. And you remain one of our wisest and staunchest advocates." This multimedia story represents a compilation of a large amount of archival photos, audio and video footage, and background on Sir Brian's UN career spanning several decades at the UN, including his seminal role in UN peacekeeping.

Report in English, Summary in English, French & Spanish: http://www.ilo.org/travail/Whatsnew/WCMS_173363/lang--en/index.htm
Millions of domestic workers around the world are not protected under general labour laws and are highly vulnerable to exploitation, says this new ILO report released on 9 January 2013, which calls on countries to extend social protection to them. According to the report, more than 52 million people worldwide are employed as domestic workers. While a substantial number are men working as gardeners, drivers or butlers, 80 per cent of them are women.
Of the 52 million domestic workers, only 10 per cent are covered by labour laws to the same extent as other workers, and more than one quarter are completely excluded from national labour legislation.

Measuring Cultural Participation (UNESCO)
This Handbook is a resource for organisations interested in measuring cultural participation, as well as a tool for raising awareness among policymakers. To this end, Measuring Cultural Participation combines theoretical and practical aspects of methodology. This is a challenging undertaking - even more so considering the wide range of data available, research undertaken and the complexity involved in defining ‘cultural participation’ for national statistics systems and policies across the world.
