Part 1: http://www.un.org/apps/news/newsmakers.asp?NewsID=70
Part 2: http://www.un.org/apps/news/newsmakers.asp?NewsID=79
The United Nations News Centre has prepared a two-part multimedia story to mark the 94th birthday in February of Sir Brian Urquhart. Sir Brian Urquhart is a living chronicle of a large part of 20th century history and occupies a special place in United Nations history. Throughout his four decades of service to the Organization, starting as one of its very first staff members and ending as an Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, he also helped shape history-making moments. He was present for the birth of the United Nations in 1945, and was witness to many of the Organization’s - and the world’s - seminal milestones. As Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a tribute on the occasion of Sir Brian’s 90th birthday four years ago, "You have had an enormous influence on every Secretary-General. Even today, staffers everywhere seek to live up to your example. And you remain one of our wisest and staunchest advocates." This multimedia story represents a compilation of a large amount of archival photos, audio and video footage, and background on Sir Brian's UN career spanning several decades at the UN, including his seminal role in UN peacekeeping.
