The Holocaust Programme has published this new discussion paper for university students. Drafted by experts at the Salzburg Global Seminar, the paper explores the links between the fields of Holocaust education, genocide prevention and human rights.
Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide - enhanced website
The Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide acts as a catalyst to raise awareness of the causes and dynamics of genocide, to alert relevant actors where there is a risk of genocide and to advocate and mobilize for appropriate action. This enhanced website contains much new material, including videos on preventing genocide and mass atrocities.

Celebration of anniversaries with which UNESCO is associated in 2010-2011
Celebrating and drawing attention to personalities, works or events that have contributed to the mutual enrichment of cultures helps to promote international understanding, closer relations among peoples and peace. UNESCO therefore participates since 1956 in the commemorations of historic events and in the anniversaries of eminent personalities celebrated by Member States and Associate Members, in order to give them worldwide significance.
New Peacekeeping Website launched
The Departments of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), Field Support (DFS) and Public Information (DPI) have launched the new peacekeeping website on 24 September 2011.

Ten-year Impact Study on Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security in Peacekeeping: Final Report to the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Department of Field Support
The Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Field Support launched a study in June 2010 to assess the impact of the work of peacekeeping missions to implement Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. The aim was to produce a comprehensive review of the interventions by peacekeeping missions to advance women’s rights and gender equality in line with the provisions of resolution 1325, and to assess the impact of these interventions largely from the perspective of local partners in post-conflict countries.

Action Plan for Energy Efficient Housing in the UNECE region
This Action Plan provides a framework for the member States of the region to raise energy efficiency in the housing sector and thus enable them to more effectively address environmental and economic challenges and meet social needs. The Action Plan lists a range of measures aimed at removing barriers to energy efficiency and progressively moving towards a low-energy and ultimately zero-energy and carbon neutral housing sector.
Afghanistan Opium Survey 2011 (UNODC)
In 2011, the Opium Winter Assessment has been divided into two phases. The first phase was carried out in December 2010 and January 2011 and covered the Central, Eastern, Southern and Western region, where opium is sown in fall 2010. A second phase will take place in February-March 2011 and will cover the Northern and Northeastern region, where opium poppy is in spring. This report presents the findings of the first phase, which covers the main poppy cultivation provinces in the Southern and Western region.

Borders in Europe & Central Asia - Special Issue of “Development and Transition“ Journal
The UNDP journal Development and Transition has published a special issue in December on Borders in Europe and Central Asia. Improved management of borders and border regions is essential to development prospects in the developing and transition economies of Europe and Central Asia. Border management programming is a key focus of the development work done by United Nations agencies and the European Union (EU).

The number of persons aged 60 and over has been increasing at an unprecedented rate. In 1980, there were 378 million people in the world aged 60 or above. Now 30 years later, that figure has doubled to 759 million, and it is projected to rise to 2 billion by 2050.
Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2011 (WHO)
The Global status report on alcohol and health (2011) presents a comprehensive perspective on the global, regional and country consumption of alcohol, patterns of drinking, health consequences and policy responses in Member States. It represents a continuing effort by the World Health Organization (WHO) to support Member States in collecting information in order to assist them in their efforts to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, and its health and social consequences.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has issued the Global Employment Trends 2011: The challenge of a jobs recovery. The report projects a global unemployment rate of 6.1 per cent, equivalent to 203.3 million unemployed, through 2011. It also noted that worldwide, 78 million young people were unemployed in 2010, well above the pre-crisis level of 73.5 million in 2007, but down from 80 million in 2009. Unemployment in the 15-24 age group stood at 12.6 per cent in 2010, 2.6 times the adult rate of unemployment.
Men in Families and Family Policy in a Changing World (DSD/DESA)
DESA’s Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) has launched this new publication focusing on the shifting roles and views of men in families. Aligning with the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Families, the publication intends to provide a global review and analysis of trends in men’s participation in family life and their importance in achieving gender equality.
migratory – on online inventory of sources of migration in Europe, Central Asia and North America
UNECE’s Statistical Division has developed an inventory of information sources and institutions dealing with migration issues. This inventory identifies over 1,700 sources located in the UNECE region. “migratory” delivers quickly and easily information on migration at national, regional and international level. For each listed source, it provides basic practical information, such as location, website, contact details and a short summary of the activities. “migratory” is intended as a reference tool for those responsible for designing and implementing migration policies and programmes, and for any other users interested in migration issues. It has been developed with support from the United Nations Development Account.
Progress on sanitation and drinking-water 2010 update (WHO/UNICEF)
The latest report of the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme on Water Supply and Sanitation entitled "Progress on sanitation and drinking-water – 2010 Update" provides the most recent data for drinking-water and sanitation, along with the implications and trends these new data reveal for reaching the basic sanitation and safe drinking-water MDG target. With the MDG target date of 2015 only five years away, it is time to intensify efforts towards achieving the MDG target and addressing the glaring disparities worldwide.

“SCORE THE GOALS: Teaming Up to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals” (An educational comic book about the MDGs)

A comic book on the MDGs, developed by the UN Office on Sport for Development and Peace, together with UNDP, FAO, UNAIDS, the Stop TB Partnership and DPI, was launched online on 24 January. The 32-page book features 10 football UN Goodwill Ambassadors, who become shipwrecked on an island on their way to playing an ‘all-star’ charity football game. Whilst on the island, the team has to tackle the eight MDGs along their journey towards being rescued. The 10 football players featuring in the comic book are Emmanuel Adebayor, Roberto Baggio, Michael Ballack, Iker Casillas, Didier Drogba, Luis Figo, Raúl, Ronaldo, Patrick Vieira, and Zinédine Zidane. The comic book is primarily aimed at 8-14 year old children and provides a fun interactive way to help them understand, familiarise and reflect about the eight MDGs as well as inviting them to take action through several activities provided in the adjoining educational guide.
State of the World's Fisheries and Aquaculture (FAO)
Fisheries and aquaculture support the livelihoods of an estimated 540 million people, or eight percent of the world population. Fish products continue to be the most-traded of food commodities, worth a record $102 billion in 2008, up nine percent from 2007. The report examines the growing legal efforts to enforce tighter controls on the fisheries sector. The report contains a special chapter on inland fisheries.
Breaking the spell: responding to witchcraft accusations against children (UNHCR)
Accusations of witchcraft cause direct violations of children's rights. Children are isolated or even rejected from their family and community, end up living on the streets, become victims of different forms of trafficking, suffer from physical and mental health problems and trauma due to the abuses they have experienced. This paper focuses on African case studies.
Delivering as One on Gender-Based Violence (UNFPA)
This report summarizes the proceedings and recommendations of the November 2010 global consultation on violence against women that brought together various stakeholders, including United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and representatives of the 10 pilot countries selected under the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality.
