New Websites within the UN System
UNRIC launches redesigned website
http://www.unric.org
A common UNRIC website is operational in 13 languages of the region: Danish, Dutch/Flemish, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. Each language site gives information about the most important current UN-related events, activities and observances, as well as UNRIC and UN family programmes in the region. The sites in non-official UN languages (all except English, French and Spanish that have links to the UN headquarters website) also present basic information on the UN organization, including its structure, goals, main documents, affiliated agencies, employment opportunities and main areas of work.
Every Woman, Every Child

"Every Women Every Child" brings together partners within and outside the UN system, including governments, the private sector, philanthropic institutions and civil society which support the “Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health”, launched during the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit.
“Hot issues: Open debates” – new DPI discussion forum

The UN Department of Public Information (DPI) has launched a periodic discussion forum on current topical issues. Called “Hot issues: Open debates,” this forum will bring together representatives of a Member State and senior UN officials face-to-face to discuss current issues of mutual interest. The primary objective of the forum is for participants and viewers to gain a fuller understanding of critical issues from multiple perspectives, including the role of the UN and that of the Secretary-General.

The UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) has released a new “Menu of Services” which provides a detailed overview of how clients can access targeted assistance on the range of publications and online tools available. The Menu of services contains information about some of the publications and online tools it has developed and examples of the impact that the UNODC is having on the ground in the following five areas: Organized crime and trafficking, corruption, crime prevention and criminal justice reform, drug abuse prevention and health, and terrorism prevention.

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) gathered a collection of UNIFEM papers on Women, peace and security. Included in this collection are papers on gender issues in early warning, peace processes, peacekeeping, post-conflict planning and financing, and transitional justice.

This report provides an account of an extraordinary set of 25 meetings held in the summer of 2010 between women peace activists and senior United Nations leaders in conflict-affected countries. It details women’s perspectives on resolving conflict and building peace more effectively, identifies issues of common concern across different contexts — as well as areas of divergence — and makes proposals for improving international, regional and national efforts to protect women and promote peace.

The UN Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) has issued a report titled Asia Pacific Disaster Report 2010 - Protecting Development Gains. The report notes that the Asia and the Pacific is a region vulnerable to natural hazards of almost every kind – from earthquakes to droughts, from floods to tsunamis and with the prospect of climate change, the situation could become even more hazardous.
'Climate Smart' Agriculture – new FAO website

Food security and climate change can be addressed together by transforming agriculture and adopting practices that are "climate-smart". A number of production systems are already being used by farmers and food producers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change, and reduce vulnerability. This website provides examples of many of these production systems considered as "climate-smart" and will be constantly updated to highlight additional examples and lessons learned from around the world.

This new report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) shows for the first time how ill-health is linked to poverty in cities, and not just among the poorest urban populations. It calls for policymakers to take action targeting health inequities.

This 20th anniversary milestone presents an opportunity to review human development achievements at the global and national levels. Life expectancy climbed from 59 years in 1970 to 70 in 2010, school enrolment rose from just 55 percent of all primary and secondary school-age children to 70 percent, and per capita GDP doubled to more than US$10,000.

The development of renewable energy from materials derived from biological sources (bioenergy) may reduce dependence on fossil fuels and help cut green gas emissions. The processes used for bioenergy production, however, consume considerable amounts of water. The report makes the case for the adoption of new planning approaches to balance the potential of biofuels production to combat climate change with environmental and social impacts.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has launched a new database aimed at sharing information on trade-related technical assistance. The Global Trade-Related Technical Assistance Database (GTAD) has been developed to ensure a coordinated approach to the design and implementation of technical assistance programmes among partner agencies, beneficiaries and donors. The database includes a search engine, which enables the extraction of information through different parameters, such as beneficiary country or by one of the 20 trade categories.

Although the report finds positive employment growth in all countries in 2010—stronger in emerging countries than in high income economies—it also says this employment growth as not been strong enough to reverse the slack that accumulated in the labour market during the economic crisis.

In this report, the World Health Organization maps out what countries can do to modify their financing systems so they can move more quickly towards this goal - universal coverage - and sustain the gains that have been achieved.
OHCHR Regional Office for Europe - new website launched

The mandate of the Regional Office for Europe is based on that of the High Commissioner as the principal UN official in charge of the promotion and protection of human rights. Through the integration of the UN’s human rights standards into EU-wide policies, legislation and implementation measures, the Regional Office aim to help address human rights challenges in Europe. It also seeks to ensure the integration of the UN’s human rights perspective in external EU policies and activities. To this end the Office provides policy advocacy and advisory services and work with governments, parliaments, judicial and national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and the UN Team in Brussels. Key regional partners include the EU institutions based in Brussels (the Council, the Commission and the Parliament), the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) in Vienna, the Council of Europe and the OSCE.
