Procurement Division launches new online library

The Library aims to increase accessibility to up-to-date procurement practices, negotiation skills and approaches, contract management, as well as case studies to broaden and refresh knowledge. It is designed to assist staff in handling day-to-day work issues by providing both theoretical knowledge and practical advice, while updating them with the latest developments in the industry, to ensure both professionalism and quality service.

The Report of the Secretary-General on the Work of the Organization to the 63rd session of the General Assembly is now available (A/63/1). In introducing the report the Secretary-General notes that: “The rising demand for our services is daunting, and yet I am convinced that with dedication, focus and commitment we can live up to the hopes of all peoples who look to us to build a more peaceful, prosperous and just world. To achieve this necessary focus, in 2008 and for the rest of my tenure, we must dedicate our effort to three key areas: delivering results for people most in need, securing global goods, and creating a stronger United Nations through full accountability.”

UNifeed, the free daily 10-minute feed from the UN, is now available through Internet. It enables news providers to cover important global issues by offering in a simple and direct way timely video from throughout the UN system. UNifeed was created in 2005 by the UN's Department of Public Information and UNICEF in response to the growing global demand for timely video material with an international focus. It is also supported by UNHCR, UNDP, the World Bank and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

CTBTO launches new website

The new website of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) includes a host of new features which will benefit States, the media, NGOs, academic institutions, think tanks and the public at large.  These features range from greatly expanded written and visual content, powered by state-of the-art technology, to a more comprehensive search engine and a number of engaging multimedia applications. Our goal is to make this website the primary source of substantive information in a number of fields related to the ban on nuclear testing.

The President of the Security Council for the month of September, Burkina Faso, has issued a concept paper for the Security Council High-level meeting on "Mediation and settlement of disputes" to be held in New York on 23 September (S/2008/590). With the overall objective of helping to promote mediation as a method of dispute settlement, the high-level meeting aims to achieve a number specific objectives as outlined in the report.

Afghan Opium Survey 2008 (UNODC)

Opium cultivation in Afghanistan has gone down by a fifth as compared to last year, according to the new report released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. UNODC attributing the decrease to good local leadership coupled with bad weather.

The publication - produced by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Programme on Youth – presents a comprehensive synthesis of the United Nations system’s work on youth.  The publication includes contributions from 30 UN Divisions, Offices, Funds, Programmes and Agencies and shows how each part of the organization is working in its area of expertise to contribute to the goals of the World Programme of Action for Youth (A/RES/50/81), which Member States adopted in 1995.

Industrial Development Abstracts database (UNIDO)

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has made available over 11,000 fully indexed abstracts of UNIDO documentation which includes descriptions of major studies and reports, reports resulting from UNIDO's technical cooperation activities, reports and proceedings of expert working groups, workshops and seminars, and publications in series. The Industrial Development Abstracts (IDA) online database covers the period from 1981 to the present. All the reports abstracted in IDA are now available free of charge as image PDF files. Until they become available online, the PDF files will be sent to requestors via the Internet.

Progress for children: a report card on maternal mortality (UNICEF)

“Progress for children: a report card on maternal mortality” issued by UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) claims that “each year, more than half a million women die from pregnancy-related causes and an estimated 10 million experience injuries, infections, disease or disability that can cause lifelong suffering” and that “most of these deaths and disabilities are avoidable.” This edition is the 7th in the series.

UNCTAD to assist Iraq on science and technology

UNCTAD signed an agreement on 1 September 2008 with Iraq to help support the country's reconstruction. UNCTAD will evaluate Iraq's science, technology and innovation policies to assist the government in spurring long-term economic growth.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has posted a technical information note on “Rising food prices and their implications for employment, decent work and poverty reduction”. The report analyses the impact of food prices on the poor and gives some policy recommendations.

The United Nations Juridical Yearbook has a new website. The Juridical Yearbook contains "documentary materials of a legal character concerning the United Nations and related intergovernmental organizations" and is an invaluable research tool. Each yearbook follows the same chapter structure. In addition to the ability to browse by year (e.g. 1963) or Chapter (e.g. chapter VI), the website also has three full text search options: the entire collection, by volume or by individual chapters.

The Office of Legal Affairs Treaty Section has launched a new online version of the UN Treaty Collection. The new website is free and provides access to UN publications about treaties, including: UN Treaty Series; Status of Multilateral Treaties deposited with the Secretary-General; and Certified True Copies. The text of each treaty is available in all languages in which the treaty is authentic.
