A new report outlines the steps taken to arrange for the deployment of the African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) (S/2007/517). Information is included about headquarters operating capability, UN support to the AU mission, preparations for the transfer of authority, force and personnel generation, logistical arrangements, administrative and legal arrangements, and financial arrangements. The Security Council authorized the operation in Resolution 1769.

The Peacebuilding Commission has issued Provisional guidelines for the participation of civil society in the meetings of the Peacebuilding Commission. This includes guidance regarding participation in formal and informal meetings of the Commission, "other than in the Organizational Committee configuration."

UNCTAD´s latest report argues that limiting the vulnerability of the Palestinian economy to Israeli restrictive measures requires expanding the policy space available to Palestinian decision-makers and re-orienting Palestinian trade within a context of regional transit transport agreements.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has issued this new report. The study of suicide attackers in Afghanistan found that people, including children, are being coerced or duped into carrying out attacks.

Opium production in Afghanistan soared to frightening record levels in 2007. However, the number of opium-free provinces in the centre and north of Afghanistan more than doubled compared to 2006.

CDM Bazaar web site

A new web site called CDM Bazaar, launched by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat and the UN Environment Programme, is designed to spur the exchange of information among buyers, sellers and service providers engaged in the Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism (CDM). The Web site allows stakeholders in the CDM to post information, such as potential emission reduction projects looking for financing, CERs available for sale, buyers looking for carbon credits to purchase, services available, carbon market related events, and employment opportunities.

The World Tourism Organization has created an information gathering web resource called "Climate and Tourism Information Exchange Service", which displays data, studies, policy papers, videos and other materials as part of its effort to combat climate change. Registration (free) is required. The organization has spearheaded the study of linkages between climate and ourism.

EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace

The EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace is a joint initiative of the European Commission (EC), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC/ILO). The new three-year programme (2007-2009) will be implemented in 12 countries: Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Suriname, and the Ukraine.

According to the report, published by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, many Afghan refugees upon returning home find themselves unable to find employment, education, adequate health care and affordable and secure housing.

Millions in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States enter the workforce each year without any formal education. A key indicator of these systemic failures was that there are an estimated 2.4 million ‘missing children’ of primary-school age and almost 12 million missing secondary-school children who should be in school but are not.

Indigenous women and the United Nations system: good practices and lessons learned

This new publication offers an overview of the work of the Task Force on Indigenous Women of the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANGWE). In 2005-2006, the Task Force collected 18 case studies submitted by various United Nations agencies about their work with indigenous women in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

UN Division for Advancement of Women of Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in cooperation with the E-Network of National Gender Equality Machineries in Africa have organized on online discussion on Women, political participation and decision-making in Africa. The discussion will run for 6 week from 4 September to 14 October 2007, and the topics include - participation of women in decision-making, politics, education, private sector, civil society and the media; and building alliances with women in decision-making positions.

The ninth treaty event will take place at Headquarters on 25-27 September and 1-2 October. The event is intended to facilitate participation by Member States in the multilateral treaties deposited with the UN Secretary-General.  This year's event focuses on universal participation in and implementation of the legal framework for peace, development and human rights. 43 treaties will be highlighted this year.
