A new report outlines the steps taken to arrange for the deployment of the African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) (S/2007/517). Information is included about headquarters operating capability, UN support to the AU mission, preparations for the transfer of authority, force and personnel generation, logistical arrangements, administrative and legal arrangements, and financial arrangements. The Security Council authorized the operation in Resolution 1769.
Civil Society participation in Peacebuilding Commission (PBC/1/OC/12)

The Peacebuilding Commission has issued Provisional guidelines for the participation of civil society in the meetings of the Peacebuilding Commission. This includes guidance regarding participation in formal and informal meetings of the Commission, "other than in the Organizational Committee configuration."

Report on UNCTAD assistance to the Palestinian people (TD/B/54/3)
UNCTAD´s latest report argues that limiting the vulnerability of the Palestinian economy to Israeli restrictive measures requires expanding the policy space available to Palestinian decision-makers and re-orienting Palestinian trade within a context of regional transit transport agreements.
Suicide attacks in Afghanistan (2001-2007)

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has issued this new report. The study of suicide attackers in Afghanistan found that people, including children, are being coerced or duped into carrying out attacks.

Afghanistan Opium Survey 2007 (UNODC report)
Opium production in Afghanistan soared to frightening record levels in 2007. However, the number of opium-free provinces in the centre and north of Afghanistan more than doubled compared to 2006.
CDM Bazaar web site
A new web site called CDM Bazaar, launched by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat and the UN Environment Programme, is designed to spur the exchange of information among buyers, sellers and service providers engaged in the Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism (CDM). The Web site allows stakeholders in the CDM to post information, such as potential emission reduction projects looking for financing, CERs available for sale, buyers looking for carbon credits to purchase, services available, carbon market related events, and employment opportunities.
Climate Change and Tourism (UNWTO)
The World Tourism Organization has created an information gathering web resource called "Climate and Tourism Information Exchange Service", which displays data, studies, policy papers, videos and other materials as part of its effort to combat climate change. Registration (free) is required. The organization has spearheaded the study of linkages between climate and ourism.
EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace
The EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace is a joint initiative of the European Commission (EC), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC/ILO). The new three-year programme (2007-2009) will be implemented in 12 countries: Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Suriname, and the Ukraine.

According to the report, published by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, many Afghan refugees upon returning home find themselves unable to find employment, education, adequate health care and affordable and secure housing.
Education for Some, more than Others? A regional study on education in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS) (UNICEF report)
Millions in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States enter the workforce each year without any formal education. A key indicator of these systemic failures was that there are an estimated 2.4 million ‘missing children’ of primary-school age and almost 12 million missing secondary-school children who should be in school but are not.
Global Outlook for Ice & Snow (UNEP report)
The report provides an up-to-date, concise review of the state of the environment and the trends in ice and snow-covered regions (cryosphere) of the world. It features case studies, illustrations, graphics and maps and serves as an educational and reference publication.
Indigenous women and the United Nations system: good practices and lessons learned
This new publication offers an overview of the work of the Task Force on Indigenous Women of the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANGWE). In 2005-2006, the Task Force collected 18 case studies submitted by various United Nations agencies about their work with indigenous women in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

While productivity levels have increased worldwide over the past decade, gaps remain wide between the industrialized region and most others, although South Asia, East Asia, and Central & South-Eastern Europe (non-European Union) & CIS have begun to catch up, the International Labour Office (ILO) said in a new report.

The UN Statistics Division has recently updated more than 70 series of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) data and more updates will be uploaded soon.
Online discussion: Women in Africa (4 September -14 October 2007)
UN Division for Advancement of Women of Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in cooperation with the E-Network of National Gender Equality Machineries in Africa have organized on online discussion on Women, political participation and decision-making in Africa. The discussion will run for 6 week from 4 September to 14 October 2007, and the topics include - participation of women in decision-making, politics, education, private sector, civil society and the media; and building alliances with women in decision-making positions.
UNIFEM annual report 2006-2007
United Nations Development Fund for Women published its latest annual report "10 years: UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women" covering the Fund's work during 2006 and 2007. The report also commemorates the 10th anniversary of the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.

The talks, held under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aim at setting the stage for the United Nations Bali Conference, next December.

A Comprehensive Legal Framework for Peace, Development and Human Rights

The ninth treaty event will take place at Headquarters on 25-27 September and 1-2 October. The event is intended to facilitate participation by Member States in the multilateral treaties deposited with the UN Secretary-General. This year's event focuses on universal participation in and implementation of the legal framework for peace, development and human rights. 43 treaties will be highlighted this year.
The Brussels based United Nations Regional Information Centre for Western Europe - UNRIC provides information on UN activities to the countries of the region. It also provides liaison with institutions of the European Union in the field of information.
