'60 over 60': A Call for Nominations of Outstanding Older People

60o60Not a competition as such, but an inspirational call to nominate your outstanding over 60's.

To complement the release of a new report, Ageing in the 21st Century: A Celebration and a Challenge, UNFPA and HelpAge International are creating a list of 60 inspiring and influential older people over 60, and need your help.

You can nominate yourself, or an older person you admire, beginning today. Perceptions of the world’s ‘age burden’ are outdated. Their contributions will become increasingly important as the world grows older.

"Reading Changed My Life" photo and video contest

literacy-compTo mark International Literacy Day, the Global Partnership for Education is organizing a photo and video contest entitled “Reading Changed My Life”, open to anybody aged 13 years or older.

To take part, submit a photo or video that shows the impact of reading on your life or the life of someone you know.

The contest will open on September 7, 2012, the eve of International Literacy Day, and will close on November 7, 2012

The top five photos and five videos will be selected by the public. Winners will receive an e-reader and be eligible for the grand prizes, consisting of photo and video equipment.

In the run up to the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) and in order to promote the work of migration and development practitioners (M&D), the EC-UN Joint Migration and Development Initiative, implemented by UNDP in partnership with ILO, UNFPA, UNHCR and the IOM, launched a photo and video competition that will be showcased in Mauritius this November at this years’ GFMD!

In no more than a 10 minute video or one photograph, the aim is to showcase how migrants contribute to the development of both their own country and/or their host country.

UN Slavery Memorial Design Competition

unslaveryThe Permanent Memorial Committee and UNESCO invited designers to submit proposals for an appropriate memorial in keeping with the following theme: “Acknowledging the Tragedy: Considering the Legacy: Lest We Forget”. The goal of the competition was to identify and select an outstanding design for the Memorial to enshrine the legacy of millions of African captives whose untold stories, memories and contribution to humanity forever changed the world’s societies.

Take One Action Against Poverty

zidaneUNDP asked you to share your story with them & inspire others!

The aim was to show the people behind all these small and big actions that help end poverty world-wide. People were asked to smile, take a photo of themselves in action, upload it onto Facebook and tag UNDP. The description of the photo had to start with "My One Action against poverty is ___", including name and location.
