School Food Waste Competition

borderedbybordersThe Think.Eat.Save Student Challenge aims to encourage secondary school and university students from around the world to uncover and understand - through the design and implementation of hands-on projects - how much food waste they are producing and the impact it is having on the environment and economy.

By undertaking one of the following activities, students or their schools can win up to US$5,000 that can be used to further implement their winning idea:

  • Investigate how much food the school wastes every year and learn about the main causes of waste
  • or Take action to eliminate or reduce food waste in the school
  • or Raise awareness in the school and/or community on the issue of food waste and why it should be eliminated


Entries must be submitted between 17 September and 16 November 2014.

IYCr2014 crystal-growing competition for schoolchildren

IYCr2014A major objective of the International Year of Crystallography is the establishment of a vibrant worldwide network of schools participating in crystal-growing experiments and taking part in national and regional competitions, to introduce students to the exciting, challenging and sometimes frustrating world of growing crystals.

To celebrate this initiative, there will be a worldwide competition in 2014, open to all schoolchildren (whether involved in a national competition or not). The winners, will be those who most successfully convey their experiences to the panel of judges through videos, diaries, essays, soundscapes and other media.

United Nations Political Cartoon Awards

cartoonawards2013finThe United Nations, in its desire to promote the highest standard of excellence in political cartoons, has established this annual political cartoon award given in the international field, and named the award after political cartoonist Ranan Lurie.

Winning cartoons will be chosen for their high professional standards in art, political analysis of events, projection of events to come, humor, while emphasizing the spirit and principles of the U.N.

Best Sustainable Development Practices in Food Security Competition

The Best Sustainable Development Practices in Food Security (BSDP) competition is part of the Expo “Feeding Knowledge” program, launched in 2012 by Expo Milano 2015 with the objective of identifying priorities and key issues to reduce food insecurity. The Best Practices will be promoted through a technological platform, which will become part of the Expo 2015 legacy.

Who can apply?
The call is open to national and local government authorities, inter-governmental organizations, civil society, the private sector, research and academic bodies and public-private partnerships that can demonstrate effective and efficient approaches which have genuinely improved people’s quality of life.

ICN2-photocompThe problems of malnutrition—undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity—exist in all countries, developed and developing, and across all socio-economic classes. By launching this photo contest, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition, emphasizing that it starts with what we eat: the products of the food and agriculture sector. FAO also wishes to engage the general public in an international effort to improve nutrition.
