DPA Multi-Year Appeal 2011-2013
The Department of Political Affairs (DPA) held a donor meeting on 16 November in New York to launch its Multi-Year Appeal for 2011-13. The meeting was attended by more than 50 delegations, many of whom took the floor to register support for DPA’s leading efforts in preventive diplomacy and mediation, as well as electoral assistance. This new Appeal, requesting US$17.9 million for its first year, emphasizes the importance of voluntary funding for allowing DPA to respond rapidly and flexibly to opportunities for preventive action in the field. Climate change is causing signifcant mass loss of glaciers in high mountains worldwide. Although glacier systems show a great amount of inherent complexity and variation, there are clear overall trends indicating global glacier recession, which is likely to accelerate in coming decades. Large gaps remain in our understanding and ability to model accurately the key processes and cause-effect relationships driving glacier response to climate change. In addition, a lot of data on glacier mass changes are not available to the public due to national interests concerning water supply.

The report's final section features a typology of national approaches to social security, with a focus on countries' responses to the economic crisis of 2008 -- and the lessons to be learned, especially concerning the short- and long-term management of pension schemes.
