Chicago Council on Global Affairs: Poll Finds World Publics Favor New Powers for the UN (Please note: This is not a UN website)
Publics around the world favor dramatic steps to strengthen the United Nations, including giving it the power to have its own standing peacekeeping force, to regulate the international arms trade and to investigate human rights abuses.  Large majorities believe the United Nations Security Council should have the right to authorize military force to prevent nuclear proliferation, genocide and terrorism.  However support is not as robust among the publics polled for accepting UN decisions that go against their countries’ preferences.

Resolutions & Decisions of the General Assembly

The first volume (containing 550 pages) of the Resolutions and Decisions of the General Assembly for the 61st session has been issued. This volume includes resolutions adopted during the main part of the session, 12 September - 22 December 2006. 

Peace & Security

Counter-Terrorism Technical Assistance Database
The Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) has launched an online database containing information about technical assistance both requested by and provided to States. The technical assistance matrix provides potential donors with a snapshot of where assistance is still needed by States in implementing Security Council resolution 1373 (2001) and the relevant provisions of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

Disarmament Insight
The Geneva Forum and UNIDIR's 'Disarmament as Humanitarian Action' project have joined forces to create “Disarmament Insight”, an initiative designed to help disarmament practitioners think in innovative ways about human security.  Disarmament Insight resources are now available online through the link above.  These include an interactive research blog, downloadable podcasts of Disarmament Insight symposia, and links to key resources.

Managing peace operations (A/61/858)

A new report of the Secretary-General, entitled Comprehensive report on strengthening the capacity of the United Nations to manage and sustain peace operations, has been issued (A/61/858). This document discusses the proposed changes to the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Field Support as well as the role of the Department of Management in supporting peacekeeping missions. Annexes include organizational charts for the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support. The proposals reflect the expanding role of UN peacekeeping in the maintenance of international peace and security.

OIOS report on sexual exploitation allegations (A/61/841)

The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) has issued a report on its investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse in the Ituri region (Bunia) in the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (A/61/841). According to the report summary, "Despite what collectively was a clear pattern of exploitation, it became virtually impossible to substantiate specific instances of sexual exploitation and abuse by conclusive evidence." The report details action taken by MONUC and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and highlights the complex social and economic circumstances that contribute to the problem.

Security Council mission on the Kosovo issue (S/2007/256)

The report of the UN Security Council mission on the Kosovo issue is now available. The report (S/2007/256) includes information on the terms of reference, activities and summary of meetings of the mission that took place from 25-28 April 2007.

Education under attack: A global study on targeted political and military violence against education staff, students, teachers, union and government officials, and institutions (UNESCO report)
Political and military violence targeting educational systems is depriving a growing number of children of the right to education. Published on the occasion of Global Action Week (April 23-29) in favour of Education for All, the report is dedicated to Safia Ama Jan, who devoted her life to getting Afghan girls into school. She was shot and killed outside her home in Kandahar in September 2006.       

Equality at work: Tackling the challenge (ILO report)
English, French, German and Spanish:

Provides a global picture of job-related discrimination, citing both progress and failures in the struggle to fight discrimination ranging from traditional forms such as sex, race or religion, to newer forms based on age, sexual orientation, HIV/AIDS status and disability.

Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP)
The Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) launched its new website on 9 May at the GBEP’s 3rd Steering Committee meeting, taking place in New York during the 15th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. The site provides information on the Partnership, which was created in May 2006 to promote the use of bioenergy and whose secretariat is hosted at FAO. It also offers links to sources of information on bioenergy and features news and a regularly updated list of bioenergy events.

Sustainable Bioenergy: A Framework for Decision Makers
UN Energy - a group of UN agencies, organizations and programmes that work in the area of energy, published a new report on Bio-energy. The report is a comprehensive analysis of social, economic and ecological sustainability of bio-energy industry and the risks involved with the industry's rapid development.
