MDGs: Global call for ideas to tackle poverty after 2015

The United Nations is calling on citizens, charities and communities to put forward their own ideas to tackle household poverty after 2015.

A new online consultation - launched this week - is inviting people to answer key questions around access to food, water, healthcare, education and jobs for the poorest people around the world.

These are the key themes set to be discussed at the next meet up of the UN's High Level Panel on the Post 2015 Development Agenda, later this month.

The public's suggestions will be fed in directly to discussions at the panel's meeting, which is due to take place in London from 31 October - 2 November.

The High Level Panel was set up to help explore the best way to fight poverty across the globe after 2015 - the target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The panel – set up by the head of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon – is co-chaired by Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron, Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Liberia's President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

The Prime Minister appointed Michael Anderson as his Special Envoy on the Development Goals.

Mr Anderson said:

"The panel is in listening mode. Panel members want to hear from people and organisations around the world – to hear their experiences, to understand their challenges, and to share their priorities.

"It is only by working together in this way that we can, as a global community, agree to a development agenda that will drive poverty eradication and meet new challenges once the MDGs expire."

The deadline for online comments is Friday, 26 October 2012. A summary of contributions will be published online by the United Nations by mid November.
