The Hague, 13 September, 2012 – The close collaboration between the Netherlands and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) was reaffirmed today during meetings between WFP's Executive Director Ertharin Cousin and Dutch partners across all areas: government, civil society and the private sector.
"We deeply value WFP's exceptional partnership with the Netherlands. The commitment the government has shown each year to supporting our operations around the globe, coupled with the vital support from the private sector and civil society, demonstrates both Dutch generosity and technical expertise," said Cousin on her first official visit as Executive Director to the Netherlands.
During meetings with Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation Ben Knapen and other Foreign Ministry officials, Cousin discussed the Netherlands' new Policy Framework for Humanitarian Aid, including their greater focus on disaster risk reduction, improved humanitarian coordination and greater accountability to both the communities affected by emergencies as well as the Dutch taxpayers.
"I want to thank the Netherlands for its leadership in 'Good Humanitarian Donorship' and for recently making a two-year multilateral contribution of €72 million. With this predictable funding, WFP can plan activities that will maximize efficiency and move quickly to provide emergency assistance,'' said Cousin, citing as examples their investments in WFP's operations in the Sahel and in the Horn of Africa.
WFP's Executive Director also convened a strategy discussion with private sector partners. The Netherlands is regarded as the birthplace of WFP's engagement with the private sector. Ten years ago WFP initiated its first-ever private partnership with TNT, the Dutch international transport company. Among its contributions, TNT has supplied logistical expertise and helped to transport food during major emergencies.
WFP's partnerships with the Dutch private sector has grown steadily over the past decade with the addition of corporations such as Unilever N.V., PostNL, the National Lottery (NPL) and the global sciences company DSM, which helped to develop highly-nutritious fortified foods for young children. Recently, the Dutch branch of Quaker Oats, a Pepsico subsidiary, raised awareness and funds through a consumer campaign.
