The Foundation of the International Center for Women Artists (ICWA) is inviting graphic designers from all over the world to take part in a design competition for its logo. A jury will award the overall winner a prize of US$2,000 while the two runner-ups are to receive US$500 each. Deadline for entries to the competition is 31 January 2012.
Under the auspices of UNESCO, the International Center for Women Artists will be a museum and arts education project celebrating the genius of women artists from around the world. Scheduled to open in Amman Jordan in 2013, ICWA is the first such undertaking ever to have received the approval of all the UN’s Member States from its inception.
The mission of the Center is to promote peace through art by becoming a forum for intercultural dialogue, education and exchange in order to empower women and girls and preserve artistic and cultural traditions.
ICWA will host a permanent collection in Jordan, organize travelling exhibitions around the world and have a strong presence online. Through the internet, it will provide a wide range of teaching resources, interactive visits, conferences with artists in residence plus a database and marketplace for women artists and their work.
ICWA’s Board of Directors is working with partners in the high-tech sector to develop an interactive multilingual platform that will expand the reach of the Center far beyond Amman. Plans for the longer term include satellites in each of the world’s geographic regions.
“It is our duty to help women artists,” says Hedva Ser, UNESCO Artist for Peace and one of the initiators of the project. “The museum and educational Center will be a unique gathering place for women artists, not just from the region, but from around the world, making it a place to learn, teach and encourage dialogue and free expression.”
Governments, businesses, philanthropic organizations and individuals are invited to help the Center by making tax-exempt donations to the ICWA Foundation. A special account has also been created at UNESCO to receive extra-budgetary funding from Member States. ICWA’s home has been generously provided by the government of Jordan. Ambassadors and artists from Brazil, China, Ecuador, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Jordan, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and the United States make up its Board of Directors.
