Merian Plaat has been chosen as the Dutch winner of the United Nations “NO to Violence Against Women” advertisement competition with her poster ‘Always New Excuses…’
The winner was announced by Dagmar Schumacher, Director of UN Women Brussels, during the celebration of United Nations Day at the UN&me event in The Hague, on Sunday 23 October. Her poster was chosen by the public of UN&me as the submission from the Netherlands that was best in conveying the message to end violence against women.
During this year's competition more than 2700 posters were submitted from 40 European countries, among them 58 were from the Netherlands. The competition was organized by UNRIC with the support of UN Women.
Between 8 March and 31 May 2011 citizens from 48 countries in Europe could submit up to 5 advertisement posters that said ‘No to Violence Against Women.’ The aim of the competition is to increase awareness of this problem that affects one out of every three women worldwide.
Earlier this week, the winners of this European advertisement competition were announced for the categories: Jury Prize, Youth Prize and European Public Prize.
The Dutch Public Prize was organized to valorize the creative work of Dutch participants to the competition and bring the message of the campaign back to the attention to the Dutch public. During UN&me a round table session was also dedicated to this theme.
