Led by the United Nations Environment Programme, and celebrated
annually on 5 June, World Environment Day is one of the principal
vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness and
encourages political attention and action on environmental issues.
WED 2011, in support of the UN International Year of Forests (IYF), is
aimed to be the biggest, most widely celebrated global day for
positive action on behalf of the environment and will be hosted this
year by India.
The 2011 WED Legacy drive features an exciting, high-profile challenge between Goodwill Ambassadors Don Cheadle and Gisele Bundchen. Full of goodwill, Gisele has pledged to plant one tree for every activity registered in her name. Full of confidence, Don Cheadle has upped the ante with a pledge for two. And on June 5th, with help from the global WED community, the winner will plant a new forest and leave the perfect WED Legacy for the UN International Year of Forests.
WED is about the power of individual actions, and our exponential power when these actions are combined. And it works. Last year, activity registration from the WED community resulted in over $100,000 in contributions to gorilla protection in the host country, Rwanda. For WED 2011, the hope is to surpass this with the planting of a new forest. So take 5 minutes to find an activity or action from the A-Z or WED Pack that you can do at home, work, school or in your neighborhood to celebrate World Environment Day. It takes only a few simple steps to easily green your daily routine and make good eco behavior a habit!
Share your activity on the various social media networks to inspire others! Register your activity on the WED Challenge Website and it will feature on the Wide World of WED!
