7 April 2011 – The President of the General Assembly Joseph Deiss has had discussions on a wide range of global topics of interest to the United Nations with senior officials of the German Government, including the president, during a visit to the European country.
Mr. Deiss’ discussion with the German officials during yesterday’s visit touched on global governance, particularly the relationship between the Group of 20 (G20) and the UN; Security Council reform; the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the conference on the Least Developed Countries that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, next month.
Mr. Deiss and German President Christian Wulff also exchanged views on the General Assembly High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS in New York in June; the General Assembly’s Summit on Non-communicable Disease in September; the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil next year, as well as recent developments in Libya, Côte d’Ivoire, Sudan and the Middle East.
Aside from Mr. Wulff, Mr. Deiss met with Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, Development Minister Dirk Niebel and Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen.
Mr. Deiss also participated in a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, the federal Parliament.
In addition, he delivered a speech entitled “The United Nations and the G20: Competition, Cooperation or Convergence?’ at a meeting co-hosted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the United Nations Association of Germany.
