CINE-ONU, Brussels, 12 April: Screening of REDLIGHT

Redlight - the movie, banner

To mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery, the United Nations in partnership with the Goethe Institute invites you to the screening of REDLIGHT on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 6.30 pm.

The documentary Redlight, directed by Guy Jacobson and Adi Ezroni, set in Cambodia, tells the story of Sokha, kidnapped and forced to work in a brothel, and her brave sister Reena; of Srey Preuv, who has been sold by her mother and of other trafficking victims. Mu Sochua and Somaly Mam, two women who have experienced violence themselves in their lives, are fighting for justice. It is too easy for criminals to buy their way out of a trial or out of prison. And as the case of Srey shows, sometimes even the families of the victims don't protect them. The filmmakers Guy Jacobson and Adi Ezroni won the prestigious Global Hero Award for their work in Cambodia. To make this film possible, Guy hired 40 bodyguards with automatic machine guns to protect his film crew and then ventured into the most dangerous parts of Cambodia's Red Light District, even shooting scenes inside the brothels.

The film will be followed by Q & A session with Pierette Pape (European Women's Lobby), Andrea Matolcsi (MONA Foundation for the Women of Hungary) and Pablo Espiniella (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights). Janos Tisovszky, UNRIC Deputy Director, will moderate the discussion.

There is no entrance fee, but as places are limited, we kindly ask you to register in advance by sending and e-mail with the subject "CINE-ONU" to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The challenges of living in Gaza are numerous and there has been little improvement in relieving the difficult circumstances that the people of Gaza often find themselves in. The conflict and blockade continue to impact on lives, as seen in widespread levels of food and financial insecurity, health problems and lack of psycho-social well-being. To inform us more on these challenges and their impact on the Gaza population, a delegation of three Palestinian refugee women from Gaza has been invited to Brussels by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation to share with us their experiences of life in Gaza. We hope that you will able to join the discussion and look forward to welcoming you.
