Background

TB is a major public health threat globally, including WHO European Region. It can be transmitted simply by breathing the same air as someone suffering from the disease.
TB costs the European Union (EU) an estimated €15 million every week and €750 million every year. Multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB) is hundreds of times more costly to treat. The burden of drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) is at risk of being replaced in some countries by epidemics of MDR-TB. With current approaches, only 19% of estimated MDR-TB cases are being detected globally and only 48% of these patients are cured. 15 of the 27 MDR-TB high burden countries in the world are in the European Region . These numbers are only set to increase if we don't act now.
