Date and Time: 30 April 2012, 16.00-18.00 followed by a reception
Every April, the International Community commemorates the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, where more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus are estimated to have been killed over a period of 100 days.
Under the theme "Learning from history to shape a bright future," this historically profound event will be commemorated in Brussels with a joint ceremony, including a film screening and the launch of a special United Nations exhibition on the Rwanda genocide.
The ceremony will also feature readings of excerpts of letters from orphans, widows and perpetrators of the genocide to the deceased. The letters were collected by Rwandan artist and director Odile Gakire Katese, as part of her project "Book of Life."
