Inspired by the success of Ciné-ONU screenings in Brussels, UNRIC teamed up with the Portuguese NGDO Platform to organize screening in Portugal under the name "Cine ONU: Ciclo de cinema sobre Direitos e Desenvolvimento".
The monthly screenings show films relevant to the work of the United Nations and Civil Society Organizations. Films are generally screened in Portuguese or subtitled, and are followed by a discussion about the movie or the theme, with experts or personalities involved in the issue. The screenings are free of charge and open to the public.
The first session of the Ciné-ONU Portugal was on 22 April, 2012, International Mother Earth Day, and was organized in partnership with the Daily News.
The film, "One Day on Earth", was a unique worldwide media event where thousands took part simultaneously around the world, with the audience filling the Daily News take part. Beside those present at the screening, around 4557 watched the movie and subsequent discussion online. (Read article here DN [in Portuguese])
On Earth Day 2012, One Day on Earth set a world record with the most global film premiere in history by screening in over 160 countries on the same day in partnership with the United Nations.
