The Sanitation Drive to 2015 is an advocacy campaign working to meet the Millennium Development Goal sanitation target and end open defecation. We support and inspire people from around the world to take action towards achieving sanitation and hygiene for all by targeting the poorest and most vulnerable people. These actions will generate substantial benefits, including increased economic growth and productivity, improved health, enhanced social equity, and a cleaner environment.
40% of people in the world still lack access to a toilet; that is 2.6 billion people with poorer health, fewer economic opportunities, living in degraded environments and denied a basic human right.
The Drive to 2015 presents a unique opportunity for all countries and organizers to capitalize on the renewed global momentum and commitment to help ensure that every person on the planet has access to adequate sanitation facilities and eliminate open defecation. The campaign website provides users with many tools to kick start your sanitation advocacy efforts and gain inspiration from the work that others have been doing around the world to end open defecation in their country.
The Brussels based United Nations Regional Information Centre for Western Europe - UNRIC provides information on UN activities to the countries of the region. It also provides liaison with institutions of the European Union in the field of information. Its outreach activities extend to all segments of society and joint campaigns, projects and events are organized with partners including the EU, governments, the media, NGOs, schools and local authorities.
